I had an amazing opportunity to create a custom net for a good friend. The walnut in this handle was felled some 50 years ago on their farm. Most of it had been used for other heirloom projects, but one piece that was still around was suitable for a longer net handle. Beautiful wood once cleaned up! Bug tracks littered part of the handle, but were filled with copper. The same copper was used to fill a bark inclusion near the top that appeared after shaping. The history behind the wood in this net is what makes it special (it looks pretty darn good too!)! There’s a few pictures in here that show the before and after of flattening the rough walnut slab used for the handle.
